EMMANUEL, ISAAC SAMUEL
EMMANUEL, ISAAC SAMUEL (1899–1972), Greek-born rabbi and historian. Emmanuel was born in Salonika, the son of Samuel Emmanuel, a rabbi. He studied at the rabbinical seminary there and was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary of Breslau. Thereafter he held pulpits in Curaçao, Panama, Rio de Janeiro, and Cincinnati. His works include Histoire de l'industrie des israelites de Salonique (1935); Gedolei Saloniki le-Dorotam (1936), 500 epitaphs of the Jewish cemetery of Salonika with biographical notes; Precious Stones of the Jews of Curaçao (1957); Maẓẓevot Saloniki (2 vols., 1963–68); and with his wife Suzanne A. Emmanuel (1912–1969), History of the Jews of The Netherlands Antilles (2 vols., 1970).
